The Power of the Force
Action Figures

Action figures are arguably the most collected merchandise from the Star Wars trilogy. By 1985 interest in Star Wars was, for multiple reasons, waning. Kenner decided that drastic action was needed to save the property, thus the birth of the POTF line, with an all new, original logo and card design, as well as a collectors coin. Ultimately, demand for merchandise was low and POTF came and went, selling very poorly. As a result, today POTF figures are not only the most difficult run of figures to chase down, but are also the second most highly in demand, behind the legendary Star Wars 12 Backs.

The card back of the POTF line shows 92 figures (Yak Face is absent). The bottom third of the card explains the coins and reads:

“SPECIAL STAR WARS COINS COLLECT ALL 62! Now you can get a Special STAR WARS Collectors Coin with each Action Figure you buy. The front shows a STAR WARS character. The back side tells you about their role in the STAR WARS movies. Collect them or trade them. There’s never been anything like it.”

There were fifteen new carded action figures introduced under the Power of the Force logo. However, not all of these were available in the United States.

Thirteen new carded figures were introduced in the U. S. for the Power of the Force line and include:

Luke Skywalker (Imp.Stormtrooper Outfit)
Luke Skywalker
(Imp. Stormtrooper Outfit)

An additional figure, Anakin Skywalker, was available loose via a mailaway offer. Of all of these, the most in demand is Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise, for the simple reason that it is the only figure released since 1979 that appeared in Star Wars instead of one of its two sequels.

Two more new action figures were only available carded in any form overseas and in Canada. These are:

Of the two, Yak Face is currently the most in demand, due both to Anakin’s availability loose in the U.S. and the mystique that surrounds “the elusive” Yak Face, though with the 1999 release of the Star Wars prequels, and Anakin as one of the main characters, this could very well change. In fact, Anakin is quickly catching up with Yak Face, at least in terms of dealer prices. In any case, the two are unquestionably the most sought after POTF figures.

In addition to the fifteen new action figures, twenty-two others that were already available on Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi cards were re-issued under the POTF logo. These figures are often more difficult to find because there were less of these “rereleases” produced when compared to the fifteen new POTF figures. This was probably because these rereleases had previously been issued on alternate cards and thus the kids and collectors would not demand as many of these. Kenner, therefore, distributed less of these figures. Of the figures re-issued on POTF card, the most in demand are Han Solo in Trenchcoat and Yoda, due primarily to their very limited distribution.

Like the new action figures, not all of the re-issues were available stateside. The figures re-released in the U. S. on POTF cards include:

Princess Leia (in Combat Poncho)
Princess Leia Organa
(in Combat Poncho)

In addition to the above nineteen POTF figures, three more were only released abroad on Power of the Force card. These figures are:

The three figures are exceedingly difficult to find with a clear bubble, due to a variety of factors including the heat and humidity in Australia, where they originate.

Both the AT-AT Driver and Nikto were carded with Warok coins.
